Kittens, online shopping and pet sitting!

So the weather is getting better, kittens are popping out everywhere and there is new stock in the online shop!

I have spent the last two weeks with three lovely little ladies in Corralejo while their mum was away. Now back home in the wilds of Tiscamanita – Sylvester was really cuddly and pleased to see me but Sally has just about stopped ignoring me now!

Some new ranges have been added to the online shop so why not have a look while you are here. It is an eclectic mix with a common theme! The crew here recommend the cat teeth cleaning sticks, the squeaky mice and the extra large dog treats – also anything involving catnip as that is always a winner!

There are two foster kittens in residence at the moment – Lou and Iru, a male and female brother and sister pair who were rescued from a really bad situation living near some bins. They have received medical treatment through El Capitan and have been spayed and neutered. Lou is the male – he is going to be a big boy and is long haired. Iru the female is very small and dainty and is short haired. Both of them are shy at first but once they know you they love cuddles and are very playful. They have met the crew here and are ok with other pets but a little wary of the dog as she is so much bigger than them. They are a bonded pair who do not like being apart and would love a safe, secure forever home of their own. They are trained to use a litter tray and have never had an accident even when they were tiny! If you would like to offer these beautiful little ones a permanent home, please contact El Capitan Rescue (their details are on the home page)

Happy New Year & Happy New Online Shop

Welcome to 2019 and also to our new online shop.

We have a range of goodies and treats for you and your pets – all the foodie treats are manufactured in the UK by popular household brands. It is easy to place an order online and we will deliver your goodies, so no need to worry about the post! Have a look and see what we can tempt you with!

As part of Sylvester’s commitment to animal welfare here on Fuerteventura, each sale will generate a donation to El Capitan Rescue or Twinkle Trust Animal Aid (we will alternate the donations on a quarterly basis)

Check out the competition in the January edition of The Voice as we are also providing a competition prize hamper – give it a try as someone has to win!

We also have two small lodgers at the moment – Lou and Iru were unable to stay in their previous home as their owner had to leave at short notice so El Capitan have been taking care of them. They are both aged about 4.5 months and are jet black with green eyes. Lou is a male and has long, very soft fur – he has already been neutered. Iru is a female and very small with short, soft fur. Both babies were originally rescued from near bins in a small village and would probably not have survived otherwise. We think they are brother and sister, but if they are not, they are certainly very close family. They are both shy but once they know you they are the most sweet and loving kittens who enjoy play and cuddles. If you are interested in offering them a forever loving home, please contact El Capitan Rescue

Big news – online shop opening 1st December!!

Sylvesters are delighted to announce that their new online shop will be opening on 1st December, selling lots of goodies for your best buddies – and a few human treats as well!  We have some super Christmas gift ideas and there is more stock due very soon, including, after a special request, dog chews and treats for larger dogs.  Purchases will be delivered to you by ourselves rather than by post.

As part of Sylvesters commitment to animal welfare on Fuerteventura, every item sold will generate a donation to the work of local animal charities.  These donations will be split between Twinkle Trust and El Capitan, both groups that carry out a huge amount of vital work here on the island.

If there are any particular products that you would like but have been unable to find, please let me know and I will check with my suppliers – bulk orders welcome.  If you have any queries please contact me.

Meet the crew!

So you can read all about me on the info pages and you can read about my fosters, but what about the guys who live here?  In order of age we have ………

Ellie

This girl is a Welsh collie who came to us from a sheep farm in deepest darkest Wales!  She was not going to be used for working sheep as she is a tricolor rather than a black and white.  Her natural habitat is roaming the valleys and hillsides, but her preferred habitat is the garden or the sofa!  She is now almost 8 and is the softest dog you could meet – everyone she sees is her next best friend and she loves any kittens that come to stay!  She flew out with me and got a special mention from the cabin crew on the PA system!

Its hard work posing for pictures!

Sylvester

This little guy is almost a year old and turned up at our door last year – we are in a remote area so it is probable that he had been dumped or had got lost and had just been wandering.  He was hungry, thirsty, full of fleas and terrified when he arrived but is now very mellow and chilled.  He is not that adventurous when it comes to going outside, and he will only go out when Ellie is with him.  As he is maturing, he seems to be developing some mobility difficulties with his spine and back legs. The vet says he is doing well but we will keep an eye on things.

Sylvester

What do you want? I was asleep!!

Sally

This little girl was originally a foster but she just fits in with the madness here so well!  She was one of a litter of 4 that were rescued by Twinkle Trust and she was the last one left after the others were rehomed.  She was very lonely and missing her brothers and sister so she came to stay with us.  She is now about 8 months old and is bouncy, lively and chatty.  Sally is really good friends with Sylvester and Ellie and her worst habit at the moment is bringing lizards into the house!

Why are you using the laptop when you could be talking to me?

More babies!

Jebbs aged 3 weeks

So it has been a busy couple of weeks here – Sylvester says that if we get any more babies he is going to live in the garage!

Our little grey and white boy that is being fostered for El Capitan is developing well and has a very healthy appetite.  He has been named Linus but we have nicknamed him Jebbs as that is my brother in laws name and they are both similar (small and grey) – sorry Gerald!  Panchi and Peanut have gone to a lovely forever home together and Nathan has gone to stay with another solo kitten for company.

We took in another two little babies from the joint neutering campaign run by El Capitan and Twinkle Trust in a village where the feral cat population had exploded due to the high number of unneutered animals.  Most of the cats had been living in the bin area and scavenging food but some kind locals were also feeding them.  These two were stuck at the bottom of a large bin and their eyes were sealed shut due to infection.  The trappers did wait as long as they could on the evening they were there to see if their mama came for them, but had to rescue them as they were starving and their eyes were badly in need of treatment.  They are now getting better and getting used to humans and will soon be ready for a home of their own.  They are both jet black little babies, one girl and one boy and are so pretty – pics to follow as they are still a little wary of the camera.

Jebbs and his new bestie, Luna

Then on Sunday we received an urgent request to help a small kitten found in a box next to the bins near Las Salinas.  He is about three weeks old and healthy but very underweight.  He has been named Luna by the kind person that found him and he will also be looking for his own home in a few weeks.  He has had a clean bill of health and has moved in to be roomies with Jebbs,

Huge congratulations to Twinkle and El Capitan on a successful campaign – nearly 30 cats trapped and neutered in one location alone, and a grand total of 60 trapped over a week with 9 needing veterinary attention for various ailments and the rest needing a spay or neuter.  Special mention as well to the trappers who managed to humanely trap such a large number of ferals, with or without the aid of olives!

This work has helped not just the individual animals but also has prevented the suffering of a large number of kittens that would have been born to a very rough life.

*If you are interested in adopting either of these babies please contact El Capitan for Linus and Twinkle Trust for Luna*

We have got a new baby!

Sylvesters are currently fostering three older kittens for El Capitan but this week has seen the arrival of our newest baby.  He is a tiny little grey and white coloured boy who was found in Puerto del Rosario all alone and crying!  On arrival he weighed in at a mighty 92 grams (teeny tiny) but is now 134 grams and growing daily!.  He was so small that he still had his umbilical cord attached and his eyes are still not open, but he seems in good health now despite the rough start.

We have had plenty of broken nights as he is always hungry but it is worth it to see him doing so well.  He is still being bottle fed several times a day but when he is between 3 and 4 weeks old we will start weaning him onto solid food.  He will also be starting to use the litter tray by himself then so will be getting more independent and learning how to be a cat!  He does not have a name as yet, but he already has a forever home lined up when he is old enough with his rescuer, and his new mama will choose the perfect name for him.

A very young kitten should never be taken from it’s mama as she can give the best possible care and food.  Sadly we do not know what happened to this little guy before he was found or where his mama is, but sometimes kittens can get left behind when she moves them, or if the mama is very young she can be terrified by the trauma of birth and panic.  The best place for a kitten is always with its litter, but if it has been lost or abandoned then it needs a lot of help to survive. Thankfully a very kind lady found this little one all alone and called El Capitan because she realised he was in trouble and needed help.

We have also said goodbye to two of our other foster babies this week.  Pamela and Paulina have gone to their lovely forever home and are already settling in well. We wish them a beautiful and happy life in their new home.  It is always sad to see ‘our babies’ leave but so rewarding to see them grow and develop and then move on to their own homes. This is why we foster.

Testimonials

Gladys

The best petsitters, with no doubts.

Julie Williams

Whilst away for almost a month our two cats had a marvellous time with visits from Debbie. We are so grateful to her and her team. They were treated very well we had messages, photos and constant contact to know that they were fine. The cats were very well looked after, they were taken for walks, their sand trays changed and cleaned, food and water changed and checked daily. They even had a visit with cat nip treats since we have returned from our holiday. I would recommend this company to anyone who loves there cats or other animals, and because they know how to take care of them well.

Mirjam – El Capitan

I can highly recommend “Sylvesters”.  They are friendly, trustworthy and dependable. The cats receive the care and attention they need.
